How to Use 1Password

Password manager for businesses & families

1Password stores every password, card number, and secure note behind one master password, so you only ever have to remember the one. Once it's set up, it also fills logins automatically, meaning you stop reusing the same weak password everywhere just because it's easier to remember.

Step 1: Create your account

Sign up and set your account password. 1Password also generates a Secret Key, a long, randomly generated code that works alongside your password to encrypt your data. Save this key somewhere safe and make a backup; losing both your password and Secret Key means losing access to your vault permanently, with no recovery option.

Step 2: Save your first passwords

Open the app, pick a vault, click the plus icon, and choose Login. From then on, whenever you visit a site you've saved, 1Password shows an icon in the login field itself, click it and your credentials fill in automatically.

Step 3: Organize with vaults

Vaults are how 1Password separates data, personal passwords in one vault, shared work logins in another. Keep the structure simple: a few clearly-named vaults are easier to manage and share correctly than a dozen overlapping ones.

Step 4: Turn on two-factor authentication

1Password can store your two-factor authentication codes alongside the password itself, filling both automatically at login. Set this up for your most important accounts (email, banking, your 1Password account itself) first.

The one habit that matters most

1Password is only as useful as your willingness to actually generate new passwords with it instead of typing your old memorized one. The built-in password generator takes the same one click as typing a weak password from memory; the honest first-week challenge is breaking that habit, not learning the software.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I forget my master password?

1Password cannot recover it for you, that's the point of true end-to-end encryption. Family and team plans have an account recovery option through an organizer, but individual accounts do not.

Can I share passwords with family or coworkers without giving them the actual password?

Yes, shared vaults let others use a login to sign in without ever seeing the plaintext password themselves.

Does 1Password work across all my devices?

Yes, it syncs across Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, and as a browser extension for every major browser.
